The Nurse Extern Program is intended to be an educational support system. The Nurse Extern is assigned to work under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse who will delegate tasks based upon the patient's needs and the Nurse Extern's individual skills and abilities. The Nurse Extern will progress to proficiency, under the direction of the Registered Nurse, through competency testing and regular performance evaluation. The Nurse Extern complies with all appropriate safety, quality and infection control standards, quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. He or she performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous customer\\-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior and Patient\\-Centered Care Model. The Externship is organized and conducted as an educational program and does not require commitment for employment following the completion of the Nurse Extern Program. The Nurse Extern works under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse, or RN designee, who will review work for conformance to standards of practice and competence in performing job duties. The Nurse Extern shall have a performance review at the completion of the ten (10\\) week program.



* Assists with and performs a variety of basic patient care activities, under the direction of a RN, which may include, but not limited to: physical assessment, pain assessment, urinary catheterizations and foley care, dressing changes, wound/decubitus care, designated respiratory care (i.e.: trach care and suctioning), venipuncture, enteral tube placement and care, chest tube care, and assist the RN or LPN with post mortem care. Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react competently, and treat the unique needs of the patient\\-age groups served. The Nurse Extern is not to administer medications at any time or circumstance.
* Assists the RN in development of the Nursing Care Plan and gathers data on patient conditions through direct patient observation, to include, but not limited to: vital signs, intake and output, and interaction with patient and family members. Documents according to hospital and unit specific guidelines, with RN co\\-signature. Reports findings to the RN. Participates in the nurse\\-to\\-nurse report, only in the presence of the supervising RN.
* Provides personal care for patients, including, but not limited to: bathing, skin care, oral hygiene, toileting, bed making, feeding, transfers, range of motion and other personal hygiene regimes.
* Collects and labels lab specimens, performs specific point of care testing (blood glucose testing, urine HCG, urine dip sticks, etc.) after completing competency testing.
* Assists the RN with the admitting process, discharge teaching and paperwork, and transfer of the patient to another unit.
* Participates in the patient and family education and instruction, under the direction of a RN. 7\\. Performs various support service duties as assigned by the RN or Charge Nurse, as required to meet the unit and patient care needs, including, but not limited to: transporting patients, stocking of unit supplies, passing water/HS snacks, trash removal, and answering unit phones.
* Participates in audits and performance improvement activities under the direction of the Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse.
* Maintains patient confidentiality, per HIPAA guidelines, at all times.
* Enhances personal growth through participation in mandatory educational programs for Externs, unit in\\-services and current literature review. Participates in the organizational competencies as appropriate.
* Follows all departmental policies and procedures, safety, environmental and infection control standards, and participates in continuous improvement initiatives.
* Performs other related duties, consistent with the purpose of the job, as assigned by the Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse or Preceptor RN.


* Currently enrolled, in good standing, in an accredited school of nursing program, leading to licensure as a Registered Nurse. Applicants must have completed their 1 st semester of their nursing program in order to be considered for a position in a general medical/surgical department. Applicants must have completed the 2 nd semester of their nursing program to be considered for a position in all other adult nursing departments. Applicants must have completed their OB/Peds rotation to be eligible for any Pediatric Department.
* Copy of unofficial transcript of current enrollment.
* Cover letter explaining the reason for the interest in the nurse externship program and how they will incorporate the experience into their short and long term career goals. The cover letter should also include their top 2 nursing departments of interest.

* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and their families, physicians, visitors, Medical Center staff, and the general public.
