  • The Hemodialysis (HD) Technician functions as a member of the Patient Care Team under the supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse to provide and document
  • care. Patient care activities involved in the role include assisting patients to complete activities of daily living (ADLs), maintain mobility, and ensure safety. The HD
  • Tech provides technical support, orders supplies and equipment, monitors the main reverse osmosis (RO) water system.
  • A. Data Collection: The HD Tech collects and documents pertinent data relative to the patient’s health. 1. Collects and monitors vital signs and weight throughout the peri-dialysis process.
  • Identify side of patient dialysis access pre-procedure to determine practical setup of dialysis machine.
  • B. Planning: The HD Tech provides input to support the care planning and the nursing report process.
  • Incorporates patient/family rights to participate in decision making about their care.
  • Utilizes standardized techniques for keeping patients and families informed.
  • C. Patient Care Delivery: The HD Tech provides personal and restorative care to patients and families. (Preceptor--list strengths/areas of opportunity in orientation progress notes)
  • Assists the patient with toileting, oral and skin care, while protecting patient privacy and dignity.
  • Assists the patient with eating and hydration, recording accurate intake and output, and utilizing oral feeding techniques as assigned.
  • Assists the patient with ambulation and use of assistive/prosthetic devices, incorporating safe patient handling techniques.
  • Employs strategies to promote a clean, orderly, and safe environment of care.
  • Demonstrates aseptic technique, standard and transmission-based precautions for infection control. 6. Identifies and uses the appropriate cleaning solutions for the various equipment and surfaces.
  • Practices according to hospital policy and within the limitations of unlicensed assistive care.
  • D. Communication: The HD Tech communicates patient progress toward attainment of goals and outcomes.
  • Reports details related to patient progress or abnormal findings to the RN and patient care team.
  • Documents dialysis care data in the patient record.
